Welcome to the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center, the premier location for competitive swimming. Located right next to the Swimming Hall of Fame, the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center has been a staple in South Florida since its opening in 1965. The facility has just finished major renovations, opening its doors on September 12, 2022, now featuring state of the art equipment from its pump room to timing console. The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center is the place to be for any competitive/recreational swimming, aquatic training opportunities, practicing and/or learning lifesaving skills, and anything for an aquatic environment.

Starting Salary: $17.35 Hourly

Job Requirements

Possess a valid American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer and a valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid certificate, or equivalent, prior to appointment
All required certifications, whether possessed at time of application or
obtained after appointment, must be kept current to continue employment in this class
Must be able to successfully pass a performance test which includes
simulated pool rescues. This test must be successfully passed every six (6) months after employment
A valid Florida driver license may be required
Higher starting salary may be offered based on experience and qualifications

Lifeguard Courses

Blended Lifeguard Course

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding (including deep water) with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid course is designed for those wishing to gain lifesaving skills and prepare you to work as a professional lifeguard at aquatic facilities (pools 7 feet deep or deeper). The course covers water rescues, surveillance, professional lifeguarding, spinal management, CPR/AED, and first aid skills. This will be a blended learning course, including an online portion (approximately six hours of online work) that needs to be completed before the first day of the course. Online material will be emailed once registered.

Lifeguard Recertification Course

The lifeguard review is for those who have a current American Red Cross lifeguarding certification and wish to extend it for another two years.

Water Safety Instructor Course

This course will certify people to be an American Red Cross swim instructor, encompassing both safety and skills to educate those wishing to learn or advance their swimming. This
course allows those who pass to teach parent and child aquatics, preschool aquatics, learn-to-swim, safety courses, and water presentations. Participants wanting to register must pass pre-test prior to registering. Please contact (954) 828-5211 for more information.

Prerequisites: Participants must be at least 16 years of age and able to swim 25 yards of the following: front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, and sidestroke. Participants must also be able to swim at least 15 yards of Butterfly, float on back for one minute in deep water, and tread water for one minute.

Fee: Resident $200, Non-Resident $300

Fort Lauderdale Dive and High Dive Team

Swim Lessons (Advance)

We will be starting swim lessons Fall 2023 at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center. We will be offering the American Red Cross Learn-To-Swim Levels 4 and 5. Further description for these levels are below, but please be aware our facility is "deeper" water and set in a more competitive swim atmosphere. With that being said, anyone wishing to join swim lessons at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center must perform a skill level assessment, aka a swim test. Level 3

American Red Cross Learn to Swim Level 3 builds on basic skills, refining strokes like front crawl and backstroke, and introducing advanced techniques such as diving and treading water. Ideal for swimmers ready to enhance their skills and confidence in the water.

Levels 4 & 5

The American Red Cross Learn to Swim Levels 4 & 5 focus on advanced stroke techniques and endurance. Swimmers refine their front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke, while mastering skills like butterfly and flip turns. Emphasis is on perfecting form, increasing distance, and improving overall water confidence. Ideal for those looking to elevate their swimming to the next level into competitive swimming.

Top of the Tower Tours

Come see the amazing heights and sights from the City of Fort Lauderdale's 27-Meter Dive Tower, the tallest pre-concrete diving structure on the Western Hemisphere! Take a guided tour up the tower, with City of Fort Lauderdale staff and/or dive coaches, as you learn more about aquatic sports (diving, swimming, etc.) and the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center. Pool Rules

Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex Rules

The lifeguards are here for the safety and well being of patrons, staff, and the facility. They are here to enforce our rules and policies, while ensuring safety at our facility. The following are the rules for our facility, each pool will post these rules as well.

General Rules:

All public patrons must sign at the entrance prior to entering the facility.
All swimmers must wear appropriate swim suit attire.
Bathers must use showers and toilets before entering pool.
Admission to the facility for purposes of showering ONLY is prohibited.
Children not yet potty trained must wear a swim diaper.
No person shall be permitted to change clothes or diapers in pool area.
The facility will be closed in the event of a thunder / lightning storm and will remain closed 30 minutes after the last sign of thunder / lightning.
A rain check may be given to patrons in the pool for one hour or less due to inclement weather.

Suit dryers are for swimming suits only.
The Pool Manager / Head Lifeguard on duty may close the entire pool complex, or any portions of the pool complex, for any previously scheduled events, programs practices, safety or maintenance reasons.
Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult or guardian 18 years of age or older.
The City of Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex and staff are not responsible for the loss / theft of personal possessions.
Lifeguards have final authority enforcing pool rules.
No flotation devices or toys.
Recreational diving is conducted on south 1- and 3-meter springboards ONLY.

Diving Well Rules (Public Diving Sunday from 11am - 1pm):

No creative diving

No gainers. No inwards. No twists. No handstands.

Only one bounce allowed on the board.
You must jump forward and not to the side of the board.
Swim directly to the ladder and exit the pool immediately.
One person on a board at a time.
Diving board fulcrums may NOT be adjusted.
Divers/dives determined by our staff to be unsafe may be stopped by our lifeguards.
No running off the springboards or platforms.
No goggles, glasses, toys, or any items permitted while utilizing springboards.
No public swimming in the dive well.
Spa is closed to the public

*Public diving at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center is a fun time for anyone to do simple dives off the boards. Our staff may limit if not stop this if patrons are not listening and abiding by our rules.

The following activities / items are PROHIBITED inside the facility:

Running on the pool deck.
Swimming in any pool without a lifeguard on duty.
Use of flotation devices, toys or ball playing.
Hanging on lane lines
Rough play
Backwards dives or dives that might be considered dangerous.
Smoking / Alcohol
Diving from starting platforms (permitted in reserved lanes with designated swim team coach only.)
Loitering or horseplay in the locker rooms.
Disruptive, foul or abusive language or behavior.
Behavior that is deemed inconsiderate, crude, or disruptive.
Spitting, spouting of water, blowing nose, defecation or urination in pools.
Glass Containers
Food, drink or chewing gum in or within proximity to the pool.
Animals or pets except trained service animals.
Bikes, Rollerblades or skateboards.
Body shaving (i.e. legs, arms, chest, etc...)

NOTE: During the event dates listed above the facility may have modified hours and/or closures. Additionally the facility may also have modified hours and/or closures when there are events scheduled in the surrounding beach area that impact facility operations.

Weather Policies

When inclement weather is threatening, the lead lifeguard will make the call to close the facility, based on United States Lifesaving Association - Lifeguard Lightening Safety Guidelines.

A lifeguard will immediately prompt one long whistle blast, signaling for everyone to get out of the water.

Thunder/Lightning

The distance of lightning is determined by using the "flash-to-bang rule.”

Begin counting at the sight of the lightning flash. Stop counting at the sound of related thunder. Divide the count by five (5) to determine the proximity in miles of the lightning strike (5 seconds = 1 mile; 50 seconds = 10 miles, etc).
The pool will be closed if the strike is within 10 miles (50 seconds or less).
Guests and personnel must get off the pool deck immediately and seek shelter indoors such as the locker room/restroom or their car.
The pool will be closed for a minimum of one-half hour after the last lightning in the area is observed.
Other factors to be considered include the size, severity, direction, and speed of the storm.

Heavy Rain/Strong Winds

Can cause visibility problems where the bottom of the pool cannot be seen.

When the pool main drains or lane markers cannot be seen, the lifeguard(s) will suspend all activity.
The use of the dive tower will be closed at wind speeds over 40km per hour (24 MPH).
Wind speed is determined using a handheld wind speed indicator from platforms 15 – 27 M.
Guests may remain on the deck during heavy rain/wind but be aware lifeguards may ask people to shelter in the main building if it is severe and/or will last for a prolonged period of time.

Fog

If fog prevents lifeguards from seeing their entire zone (surface and depth of water), the pool will be closed until the fog lifts.

Temperature

Pools may close if the air temperature, including wind chill, drops below 45 degrees or is predicted to drop below 45 degrees.
